Preventing a child’s removal from Australia

Background
The client feared the other parent would take their child out of Australia and needed the court’s protection quickly.
Approach
Prepared and filed an urgent application, and made settlement offers during the proceedings.
Outcome
The court made orders and the child was immediately placed on the Australian Federal Police Family Law Watchlist, to prevent the child being taken overseas. The settlement offers later supported a costs order in the client’s favour.

Sole parental responsibility for a father overseas

Background
The child’s other parent could not be located. The client, the child’s father, lived overseas and needed to be able to make long-term decisions for the child.
Approach
Applied to the court on his behalf for sole parental responsibility, so that he alone could decide major long-term issues such as schooling and health.
Outcome
The matter was resolved by consent orders: orders the court makes once both sides agree.

Background
At the end of a long relationship the client was facing a serious illness, and the settlement needed to reflect their future needs.

Sylvia Liu is a Partner at Sunsolis Legal and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of International and Global Studies (Government and International Relations) from the University of Sydney, and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice.

Her family law practice covers divorce, property and financial settlements, parenting arrangements, spousal maintenance and binding financial agreements, with particular expertise in disputes involving children. She combines strong advocacy with a practical approach, aiming for timely and cost-effective outcomes.

In immigration law, she advises individuals and businesses on visa eligibility, temporary and permanent visa applications, compliance, and merits and judicial review. She also handles contractual, commercial and estate planning matters, and works with clients in English and Mandarin.
